Which of the sayings regarding the contamination of liquids and water is the most preponderant and latest, and what is the response of the Malikis and Hanafis to the Hadith: "If water reaches two Qullas, it does not carry impurity"?
Scholars have differed concerning liquid when it comes into contact with impurity: Does it become impure merely by contact, or if it is two qullahs or less, or does it not become impure unless it changes? The relied-upon opinion for us is that water becomes impure upon contact with impurity if it is less than two qullahs. The opinion that water does not become impure except by change was championed by Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah. Those who hold this view based their argument on the weakness of the hadith of the two qullahs, or that its mafhūm (inferred meaning) is contradicted by the hadith: "Indeed, water is pure; nothing makes it impure." The generality of this hadith is given precedence because it aligns with the practice of the people of Madinah.
