It is permissible to listen to the Quran while studying or working, and it is a good deed for which a Muslim is rewarded. As for raising the volume of a radio or recorder with the Quran in markets and shops, some scholars have explicitly stated that this is forbidden due to the disrespect it entails for the Quran. This is because markets are places of noise and where their occupants are busy with trade and do not listen, and in our time, they are also places of immodesty and violations of Islamic law.
