What is the ruling on listening to the Holy Quran while being occupied with another task?

Listening to the Quran via radio or recorder is a righteous deed for which a person is rewarded. There is no harm if one is engaged in work as long as they listen to it as much as possible. However, if the work prevents one from listening attentively to the Quran, this is not appropriate, as it goes against proper etiquette and respect. Al-Nawawi said: "Avoid laughing, clamoring, and conversing during recitation, except for speech necessitated by circumstances, and let one fulfill the saying of Allah the Almighty: (And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention that you may receive mercy)." Al-Buhuti narrated from Ibn Aqil the prohibition of reciting the Quran in markets where people shout with calls and sales and cannot listen. Sheikh Al-Fawzan replied that listening to the Quran from the radio or recorder while busy is permissible, as attentive listening is required according to one's ability. As for Sheikh Ibn Uthaymeen, he said that reciting the Quran – even via a tape – while being heedless of it is not among the etiquettes, citing the verse: (And when the Quran is recited, then listen to it and pay attention). He advised listening when one is free and turning it off when busy, and he permitted listening before sleep if one is lying down awaiting sleep.
