What is the predominant opinion and evidence regarding the prophethood of Mary, peace be upon her?

The preponderant view is that Mary, peace be upon her, was a righteous woman, among the best women in the world. She was a Siddiqah (truthful/righteous one) and not a prophetess, because prophethood is exclusive to men. Allah did not send any prophet from other than them, as He, the Almighty, said: "And We sent not before you except men to whom We revealed." (Quran 21:7) Furthermore, Allah described Mary as a Siddiqah and did not describe her as a prophetess in His saying: "The Messiah, son of Mary, was not but a messenger; [other] messengers had passed on before him. And his mother was a Siddiqah." (Quran 5:75) Had she been a prophetess, she would have been described as such, for the rank of prophethood is greater and higher than the rank of Siddiqiyah (truthfulness/righteousness).
