Are Mary and Moses—peace be upon them—considered prophetesses, despite the Qur'an stating, "And We sent not before you except men"? And is it possible for others besides prophets to receive revelation?

The mention of Mary alongside the prophets or Allah's revelation to Moses' mother does not necessarily mean that either of them was a prophetess. Linguistically, wahy (revelation) is swift, hidden communication, and it can be an innate inspiration. Scholars have differed regarding the prophethood of Mary, Moses' mother, Eve, Asiya, Al-Khidr, and Dhu al-Qarnayn. The majority of them hold that prophethood and messengership are exclusive to men. The most preponderant view is that none of these individuals were prophets. The mention of Mary alongside the prophets does not necessarily prove or negate her prophethood; it may have been an interjection to clarify the story of Jesus and to argue against the People of the Book.
