What is the difference between Wajib and Fard?

The majority of the Usuliyyun (jurists specializing in the principles of Islamic jurisprudence), in contrast to the Hanafis, hold that 'fard' (obligatory) and 'wajib' (necessary) are synonymous. Both refer to what the Lawgiver (Allah) has commanded as binding, for which the doer earns reward and the abstainer incurs punishment. As for the Hanafis, they differentiate: 'fard' is what is established by a definitive proof, while 'wajib' is what is established by a presumptive proof. This difference is semantic, with no real implication for the legal ruling, as all agree on their binding nature and the punishment for those who abandon them.
