Is it permissible to cut down a lote tree (sidr) or any fruit-bearing tree if it is harmful?
Source: FtawySummarized from the full answer at Ftawy · imported Sep 2, 2026
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade the cutting of sidr trees. Some scholars interpreted this as referring to sidr trees in the wilderness that people seek shade under, or sidr trees within the Haram (sacred precinct), or sidr trees owned by an individual. It is permissible to cut them out of necessity or for a benefit, as long as they are not owned by others or located within the Haram. Cutting fruit-bearing trees for no purpose is not permissible because it constitutes corruption on earth.
