The Sunnah for the Aqiqah (sacrifice upon childbirth) is two sheep for a male and one sheep for a female. It is permissible for more than one newborn to share in an Aqiqah from cattle or camels. Some jurists are of the opinion that a camel or a cow suffices for seven, like the udhiyah (sacrifice during Eid al-Adha), while others believe it suffices for only one, and some do not permit it at all. The best is to sacrifice sheep for each newborn. The Aqiqah meat can be distributed raw or cooked, and it is preferable to cook all of it. As for the amount to be distributed, it is not legislatively specified, but some jurists hold that it should be distributed like the udhiyah: one-third for eating, one-third for charity, and one-third for gifting.
