What should one do who has been afflicted by the unlawful and repented many times, then returned to the sin, and finds no one to help him complete his repentance, nor feels devotion in prayer, nor the sweetness of the Qur’an, nor is his heart affected by verses of punishment or the remembrance of hellfire?

The cure for hardening of the heart and loss of devotion lies in renewing repentance and remorse for sins, and resolving not to return to them, while seeking assistance from Allah Almighty. Among the helpful means for this are: frequent remembrance of Allah with the tongue and heart, reciting the Quran with contemplation, showing kindness to orphans and the needy, frequently remembering death, visiting graves to reflect on the fate of their inhabitants, and consuming lawful earnings.
