What is the ruling regarding someone who was unable to perform the Friday prayer because he could not perform ghusl from janabah due to a wet dream, and woke up after the imam had finished the khutbah? Is he sinful or is expiation required of him?

If a person who is asleep is in a state of ritual impurity (janabah) and does not wake up until after the Friday prayer has concluded, there is no sin upon him and no expiation. However, he must perform a ritual bath (ghusl) immediately, even if it requires heating water.

If he is unable to wash his entire body, he should wash what he can and perform tayammum (dry ablution) for the remainder. If he is completely unable to wash his entire body, he should perform tayammum.

One who experiences a wet dream (ihtilam) is not required to perform ghusl unless he sees semen. He must make up the Friday prayer as a Dhuhr prayer (four rak'ahs). Performance (adaa') means that all or part of the prayer occurs before its time expires, while making up (qadaa') means performing the prayer after its time has expired.
