What is istihada (prolonged vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation) and what is the ruling concerning the blood that comes after it? Is the discharge of a white secretion sufficient to rule that one has attained purity from both menstruation and istihada?

The answer

Firstly: Istihadah (vaginal bleeding outside of menstruation) is blood that cannot be considered menses. This occurs if it exceeds fifteen days, or is less than one day and one night, or if a pregnant woman or a young girl before puberty sees it. It is known to be a blood of illness that flows from a vein called "al-adhal".

Secondly: If blood, or a brownish or yellowish discharge, appears after purity from menstruation: 1. If it is continuous: The woman must perform istinja (cleansing), take precautions, and perform ablution for the time of each prayer. She prays despite the continuous flow, and her ablution is invalidated upon the entry of the time for the next prayer. 2. If it stops for a sufficient time for ablution and prayer: She must wait to perform the prayer during the period of purity. If something flows during the prayer, she must repeat her ablution and prayer.

Thirdly: If a woman sees the white discharge (al-qassah al-bayda'), she has become pure from menstruation. If blood, or a brownish or yellowish discharge, appears thereafter and continues, it is blood of fasad (corruption) or istihadah. The ruling for blood of fasad is no different from that of istihadah.
