What is the ruling on someone who has accustomed her tongue to swearing oaths and then is unable to fulfill them? Is it permissible to take money from her mother to feed the poor as expiation for the oath? And is previous fasting sufficient as expiation if she did not know that it was obligatory?

A Muslim should guard his tongue from excessive swearing. Fasting is not sufficient as expiation for an oath when one is able to feed or clothe ten poor persons, or free a slave. If you do not have the means to feed ten poor persons, then your fasting is sufficient. A child is not obligated to take money from his parents to expiate for his oath, but if his parents or others give him money for that purpose, the expiation is valid with it. Strive to estimate the oaths you have broken and pay what you believe will clear your conscience.
