Is it permissible to speak with a girl one wishes to marry about religious and academic matters, with the knowledge of her family, or to give her a souvenir that does not displease Allah, while awaiting the circumstances to allow for a legitimate engagement?

Relationships between young men and women are forbidden in Islam and lead to discord and unlawful attachment. Future circumstances do not guarantee marriage, and a girl should not be kept waiting for an indefinite period, nor should one persist in disobeying Allah while awaiting an improvement in financial conditions. It is obligatory to immediately cease this relationship and to propose marriage seriously when one is able to marry within a reasonable timeframe. There may be good in what you dislike, and Allah knows while you do not know. You should focus on your studies and put your trust in Allah.
