Does divorce take effect if the husband says to his wife: "You will be divorced from me if you enter your workplace," intending to prevent her from going to her job, and then he gives her permission to go? And is expiation obligatory upon him?

It has been previously explained that divorce occurs in such cases according to the view of the majority of scholars, and that some scholars hold that it does not occur, and an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yamin) is required if the intention was not to effect a divorce. The view of the majority of scholars is that which is adopted for fatwas, and the husband's permission for the suspended condition to occur has no bearing. One should be cautious of uttering divorce pronouncements and using them as a means to resolve marital problems.
