Are the times of sunrise and sunset, and the ten minutes before the Dhuhr call to prayer, times of detestability or prohibition for prayer, and how long do these times last? Is it permissible to pray تحية المسجد (two rak’ahs upon entering the mosque) ten minutes before the Friday call to prayer?

The prohibited times for prayer are at sunrise, at sunset, and when the sun is at its zenith in the middle of the sky. The duration of the prohibition before the sun declines (zawāl) continues until the time of zawāl begins, so the ten minutes before zawāl are included in the prohibition. Similarly, the prohibited time at sunrise begins from the first appearance of its disc until it fully emerges, and at sunset from the beginning of its disc's disappearance until it completely sets. There is no difference in the prohibited times between Friday and other days according to the Hanbalis. As for the "greeting of the mosque" (tahiyyat al-masjid) during the prohibited times, there is a difference of opinion among scholars: a group held that the prohibition is specific and the command is general, while others held the opposite.
