What is the detested time for prayer (waqt al-karahah), and is it permissible to offer the supererogatory (Sunnah) prayers during this time?
The times when prayer is forbidden are three in brief and five in detail. These are times when voluntary prayers are prohibited, but this prohibition does not include obligatory prayers or their making up. The general rule for voluntary prayers is that they are permissible at all times, except for specific times when the Lawgiver has forbidden prayer. Some jurists have made exceptions for certain types of supererogatory prayers that are permissible during the forbidden times, including: the two rak'ahs of circumambulation (tawaf), repeating a congregational prayer, the regular sunnah prayer if one was occupied and missed it, two light rak'ahs for someone who enters the mosque on Friday while the Imam is delivering the sermon, and the funeral prayer. There is a difference of opinion among jurists regarding the permissibility of performing prayers with a specific cause (dhat al-asbab) such as tahiyyat al-masjid (greeting the mosque prayer) and sunnat al-wudu' (prayer after ablution) during the forbidden times, and the preponderant opinion is that they are permissible.
