Is it permissible to perform the Tahiyat al-Masjid (mosque greeting) prayer during the disliked times (makruh times), specifically a few minutes before the Maghrib (sunset) call to prayer? And what are the disliked times for performing supererogatory (nafl) prayers? And what are the prayers that there is no harm in performing during these times?
The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade prayer after Asr until the sun sets, and after Fajr until the sun rises, and after it rises until it has ascended by the measure of a spear (approximately fifteen minutes), and when the sun is at its zenith in the middle of the sky, i.e., a few minutes before the Dhuhr prayer time begins, and when the sun turns yellow until it sets. The Ummah has unanimously agreed on the reprehensibility of performing prayers that have no specific reason during these times. They have also agreed on the permissibility of performing the obligatory prayer of that time. However, they differed concerning supererogatory prayers that have a reason, such as تحية المسجد (greeting the mosque prayer), سجود التلاوة (prostration of recitation), and making up missed prayers. The madhhab of Ash-Shafi'i and others permits this without reprehensibility, and this is the most preponderant opinion. As for Abu Hanifa and others, they held the view of prohibiting all prayers during these times, except for the prayer of that specific time.
