What is the meaning of the verse: "O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire," and who are the family members mentioned in the verse?

This is a call to believers to protect themselves and their families from Hellfire, and it is the second such call in Surat At-Tahrim. It is for believers to emulate the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in admonishing their families, as stated in His, the Almighty’s, sayings: "And enjoin prayer upon your family and be steadfast in it" and "And warn your closest kindred." This emphasizes the responsibility of those closest first, for "All of you are shepherds, and all of you are responsible for your flock." Protection is achieved by obeying Allah’s commands and avoiding His prohibitions, and protecting one’s family is done by teaching them, advising them, and guiding them to goodness. Family includes spouses, children, and those under a Muslim's guardianship.
