Does the Hadith, "If you see people whose covenants have become corrupted and whose trusts have become light... cling to your home, control your tongue, take what you know, leave what you condemn, attend to your own private affairs, and leave aside the affairs of the general public," apply to the current demonstrations in Egypt?

This hadith is interpreted to mean a situation where there is no one who listens to good or helps in calling to it. As for someone from whom people benefit or who is able to cooperate, isolation is not permissible for him; rather, he must mix with people and be patient. This era still contains good, and many people benefit from da'wah (calling to Islam) and amr bil-ma'ruf (enjoining good), so the hadith does not fully apply to this era. This hadith is used to argue for the cessation of amr bil-ma'ruf when there is no acceptance or benefit, in situations where evildoers are many and good people are weak.
