The question

What does God mean by the verse: "adornment of speech" (زخرف القول) and "and you will surely recognize them by the tone of their speech" (ولتعرفنهم في لحن القول)? And is the intention to recognize the hypocrites through their outwardly beautiful words and their inwardly malicious nature?

The answer

"Zukhruf al-qawl" (ornamented speech) is the embellishment and beautification of falsehood, and its origin is gold. It is applied to everything that is adorned and made to appear good, while being false. Its meaning is that some devils among humans and jinn beautify evil deeds for one another. This is understood from "and some of them inspire others with ornamented speech as delusion." This refers to vain hopes. As for "lahn al-qawl" (the melody/tone of speech), it refers to the hidden meaning of words, such as كناية (metaphorical expression) and تعريض (allusion), and that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, knew their intentions and methods from the indications in their speech.
