Does a divorce count as two occurrences or one if the wife insists on her request for housing, after the husband became predominantly certain that his intention to make the divorce conditional on her insistence applies only to the issue of housing?

What you issued was merely a promise and a threat of divorce, which does not necessitate its execution on your part. Your wife should fear Allah and not burden you with what you cannot bear. Her leaving your home to demand a ground-floor dwelling is considered 'nushooz' (disobedience). The wife's right is an independent dwelling according to the husband's ability, without causing harm. We advise your wife to fear Allah, to be a support to her husband, and to look at those who are less fortunate than her so that she may be content with what Allah has bestowed upon her. Happiness lies in contentment and affection, not in wealth and palaces. Contentment with what Allah has ordained is a great cause for peace of mind. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Look at those who are below you, and do not look at those who are above you, for that is more likely to make you not belittle the blessings of Allah."
