Is it permissible for a traveler to combine and shorten the Maghrib and Isha prayers with an earlier combination (jam’ taqdim) after some time has passed since the Adhan for Maghrib? Is the intention for the type of combination (earlier/later) a requirement? And must the two prayers be performed consecutively without a break, and if a break is allowed, what is the maximum duration for the break?

Whoever intends to combine Maghrib and Isha prayers with an early combination (jam' taqdim) must perform them together at the time of Maghrib, which ends with the disappearance of the twilight (shafaq) approximately an hour and a half after the Maghrib Adhan. The majority of scholars stipulate continuity (muwalat) between the two prayers for the combination to be valid, such that no long interval separates them that would invalidate the combination. The determination of what constitutes a long interval is based on common understanding ('urf). Furthermore, the intention to combine (whether early or delayed) must be made before commencing the prayer.
