Is it permissible for me to play an Eastern song and dance to it with the aim of releasing inner suppression, distress, and depression, due to the boredom that afflicts me in a foreign land and not speaking with anyone?
The path to inner peace and tranquility of heart is the remembrance of Allah Almighty. Whoever turns away from His remembrance will have a life of hardship, and being distant from Allah is a cause of troubles. Therefore, it is advised to maintain the regular recitation of dhikr (remembrance) in the mornings and evenings, for it is the way to contentment, as Allah Almighty said: "So be patient over what they say and exalt [Allah] with praise of your Lord before the rising of the sun and before its setting; and during periods of the night [also] exalt [Him] and at the ends of the day, that you may be satisfied." This is the way to contentment and the removal of distress, not singing. There are permissible nasheeds (chants) that can cheer the soul if they are free of musical instruments.
