What is the ruling regarding someone who vowed to fast an entire lifetime while in a state of anger?
A vow to fast for a lifetime is valid and must be fulfilled, with the exception of fasting on Eid days, the days of Tashreeq, Ramadan, and its make-up fasts. If the one who made the vow becomes unable to continue fasting due to old age or a chronic illness from which there is no hope of recovery, then they must offer an expiation for a broken oath (kaffarat yamin). However, if the vow was made in the heat of anger, similar to an oath, with the intention of preventing something or urging something, then it is a vow of contention and anger (nadhru lajaj wa ghadab). The ruling for this is that the person has the choice between fulfilling it or breaking it, in which case they must offer an expiation for a broken oath. If you intended by the vow to draw closer to Allah, then you must fulfill it. If it was a vow of contention, then you have the choice between fulfilling it or offering an expiation for a broken oath.
