Can religion be divided into constants and variables?

There is no division in the words of the scholars distinguishing religion into constants and variables; for the entire religion is constant, and it was perfected and became firmly established with the death of the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him. It is not subject to change or alteration. What might be meant by "variables" are the scholarly efforts (ijtihādāt) of scholars regarding issues for which there is no specific text. These scholarly efforts may change based on the emergence of new evidence, and they are not part of the constant religion to which falsehood cannot come. Students should be careful in their speech so that those who follow their whims do not exploit such terms to justify their desires.
