Why did the command come from "the average of what you feed your families" and not from "the average of what your families eat"? And is the meaning restricted only to those who feed?

The expiation for an oath is in the order mentioned in Surat Al-Ma'idah, and it includes feeding ten needy persons from the average of what one feeds his family, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. And whoever cannot find any of that, then he must fast for three days. The obligatory amount for feeding is half a sa' for each needy person (approximately 1.5 kg of rice or similar), and for clothing, a single garment for each needy person is sufficient. It is not permissible to move to fasting if one is able to feed, clothe, or free a slave. And His saying, the Most High: ﴿of the average of what you feed your families﴾ means that the feeding should be from the

usual quality of food for the one who expiates, not from the highest or lowest quality, which is what people commonly understand as average.
