What is the authenticity and meaning of the Hadith: "If any of you has a ‫Hadath‬ (passes wind, etc.) during his prayer, let him hold his nose and then leave"?

The aforementioned hadith is authentic and guides one who has lost ritual purity (wudu) during prayer on what to do. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, commanded him to hold his nose with his hand. Scholars have recommended doing so with the left hand to give people the impression of a nosebleed. This is not considered showing off (riya') but rather a form of embellishment and seeking safety from people.
