What is the punishment for one who helps in stealing an individual's effort and attributing it to another, and what is the punishment for one who remains silent about that, while the work is falsely and slanderously attributed to him?
If an individual's work and effort can be distinguished, then he is most deserving of it and of having it attributed to him. It is impermissible for anyone to usurp his right or attribute it to someone else. Whoever does so is an oppressor, a liar, a false witness, and exposed to Allah's punishment. He must repent and restore the right to its owner. Whoever assists in such an act is mistaken and must repent, for Allah the Almighty says: "And do not cooperate in sin and aggression." The one who remains silent about an evil act is not blameworthy if he cannot denounce it or if harm would befall him. Otherwise, he must denounce it, for the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever among you sees an evil, let him change it with his hand; if he cannot, then with his tongue; if he cannot, then with his heart—and that is the weakest of faith."
