Is postpartum memory loss and forgetfulness normal, or is it due to sins? And is a woman considered sinful if she makes a promise and then forgets it?
Forgetfulness or a weak memory may result from birth, which is no cause for fear. It may also be due to sins, hence one should hasten to repent to Allah. Unintentional forgetfulness is forgiven, as stated in the Almighty’s saying: (Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake). There are means to help remember appointments, such as using a planner (paper or electronic), an alarm clock, or a mobile phone. One must pay attention to appointments, as breaking a promise is a characteristic of hypocrites, as mentioned in the hadith: (Four traits, whoever possesses them, is a pure hypocrite; and whoever possesses one of them, possesses a characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when he speaks, he lies; when he promises, he breaks it; when he disputes, he acts immorally; and when he makes a covenant, he betrays). One should clarify the excuse to the other party when an appointment is missed.
