Is it permissible for an ordinary Muslim to examine the Gospel found in the hands of the People of the Book?

What is in the hands of the People of the Book today, of the Torah and the Gospel, has been subjected to distortion through additions and omissions, and alteration and change in many places. Allah the Almighty has testified against the People of the Book concerning this distortion and alteration. As for what remained free from distortion, there is no need for a Muslim to look into it, because the Qur'an came abrogating and superseding the previous scriptures. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, forbade asking the People of the Book or believing them. A group of scholars has gone so far as to prohibit looking into the books of the People of the Book, and it is not permissible for a Muslim to read them except for scholars who are deeply rooted in the Qur'an and Sunnah, for the purpose of refuting the People of the Book and dispelling their misconceptions.
