What is the ruling on touching an impurity unnecessarily, such as touching a dog?

There is a difference of opinion among scholars regarding the impurity of a dog, and likewise, there is a difference concerning touching impurities without necessity. Some scholars, like the Malikis, only deem it disliked (makruh), while others consider it forbidden (haram).
