Is it permissible to adopt the view that considers the one who abandons prayer an infidel (kafir) in order to avoid making up the days I did not fast, knowing that I mostly fasted but did not pray, and now I follow the opinion of those who do not consider the one who abandons prayer an infidel?

A previous fatwa (definition) (No. 140147) clarified that there is no necessary correlation between stating that one who abandons prayer is an infidel and the view that there is no obligation to make up the missed prayers. It also mentioned that some scholars believe an apostate should make up what they missed if they return to Islam. Similarly, there is no necessary correlation between not making up missed fasts and stating that one who deliberately abandons fasting without excuse is an infidel. Some scholars are of the view that one who deliberately abandons fasting is not required to make it up, as was narrated from Ibn Mas'ud and Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both). The fatwa given is that making up prayers and fasting is obligatory, with clarifications on how to make up for those who do not know the number of missed prayers in fatwas No. 142278 and 149195.
