Is it permissible to give an ongoing charity (sadaqah jariyah) on behalf of people who have been backbitten, given the difficulty of seeking their forgiveness?

Backbiting is a major sin. One must seek absolution from those they have backbited. If unable to do so, then they should supplicate and seek forgiveness for them. There is no objection to performing ongoing charity on their behalf.
