Is it permissible to pray for the guidance of two people who insulted the Messenger and mocked the word of Allah, or is it obligatory to pray against them?

It was part of the Prophet's guidance (peace and blessings be upon him) to supplicate for the guidance of disbelievers, as he prayed for Daws, Thaqif, and Abu Hurairah's mother, and he said: "I was not sent as a curser, but rather as a mercy."

It is also legislated to supplicate against disbelievers and wrongdoers. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated against the disbelievers on the Day of Uhud and against Quraysh. Noah and Moses (peace be upon them both) also supplicated against disbelievers.

Scholars have reconciled these two matters. Supplicating for the guidance of disbelievers is legislated and encouraged. Noah's supplication came after despairing of his people's faith. It is permissible to supplicate against disbelievers in a way that weakens them, and against their fighters and oppressors. It is possible to combine supplicating for guidance for those whose guidance is hoped for, and supplicating for destruction for those known not to be guided.
