Is it a condition for the one who inflicts the evil eye (the 'ain) to see the one afflicted by it (the ma'yoon) for the effect of the evil eye to occur, or can the effect occur through another type of contact between them?

"The evil eye can afflict someone merely by seeing them, even through visual communication tools, because the act of seeing with the eye has occurred. Harm can also befall the envied person simply through envy, without direct eye contact. Protection from the evil eye and envy is easy and readily available. The evil eye is not mentioned in the Holy Quran but is found in the Prophet's Sunnah."
