Is it permissible for a person accustomed to offering a sacrifice (Uḍḥiya) to donate its value to a needy family this year, especially since he will spend Eid alone in a country other than his own, and is only able to offer one sacrifice?

The Udhiyah (sacrificial animal) is a confirmed Sunnah. Slaughtering the Udhiyah is better than donating its value or giving a sheep in charity, due to the act of drawing closer to Allah and manifesting the ritual. Therefore, if a person has money with which they wish to draw closer to Allah, offering the Udhiyah with it is more befitting, unless there is an urgent need for money among the poor that meat alone cannot fulfill, or if they are needy relatives. In such cases, giving charity to them is better. One may also delegate someone to slaughter on their behalf in countries where there are many needy people, if the needy family is not in their place of residence.
