What is the most suitable position for the Imam in the mosque when leading the congregational prayer? Should he stand directly opposite the mihrab or beside it?

The majority of scholars hold that the Imam may stand in the mihrab or behind it, depending on the mosque's capacity. Some, however, are of the view that he should stand to the right of the mihrab if the mosque is spacious. It is disliked for the Imam to pray in the mihrab without need, such as a narrow mosque or a large congregation, because this might prevent some of the congregants from seeing him.
