What is the ruling on a father who neglects his family and does not provide for them, and saves unemployment benefits while the mother spends on necessities? Is the sin of the father's anger over money and his not speaking to his son borne by the son? Is the son sinful if he speaks to his mother without his father's knowledge? Did the Companions leave their children and go out for da’wah while the father did not bear responsibility for his family?

The root of the problem is ignorance of the rulings of Islamic law. Providing for one's wife and children is one of the greatest rights and acts of devotion, encompassing food, drink, clothing, and shelter. Its obligation is indicated by texts from the Qur'an and Sunnah, and the consensus of scholars, such as the Almighty's saying: (Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given some over others and because of what they spend [to support them] from their wealth), and the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "And they have a right upon you to their provision and clothing according to what is reasonable." Furthermore, providing for one's family is a great charity for which a Muslim is rewarded: "The best dinar a man spends is that on his family." Therefore, it is not permissible for a Muslim to neglect his family, for "It is enough sin for a person to neglect those whom he supports."
