Is it permissible to substitute "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said" with "The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said" in Hadith?

Scholars have differed on the permissibility of substituting the word "Nabi" (Prophet) with "Rasul" (Messenger) and vice versa. One group forbade it, while another group permitted it, which is the more preponderant view. Among those who held this view are Ibn Hanbal, An-Nawawi, As-Suyuti, and Al-Iraqi, because the meaning does not differ here. As for the hadith of Al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, it does not contain proof for prohibition, because the wordings of supplications (adhkar) are divinely prescribed (tawqifiyyah).
