Is not God's informing Abu Lahab and some hypocrites and Iblis that they are among the people of Hellfire—which might drive them to despair, hopelessness, and hatred of God and His Messenger—tantamount to inciting them to sin, even though God commands only good and forbids immorality?

God's informing that some of His creation are destined for Hell was not an initial decree before the establishment of proof against them. Rather, it came after their turning away and arrogance. Thus, God punished them by depriving them of faith and by declaring them among the inhabitants of Hellfire. A distinction must be made between the universal will (al-iradah al-kawniyyah), which necessitates the occurrence of what is willed, and the religious legislative will (al-iradah al-diniyyah al-shar'iyyah), which signifies love for what is willed and contentment with it. God does not love or approve of disobedience, but He creates it and decrees it universally. Events are divided into four categories: those to which both wills are related (like good deeds that occurred), those to which only the religious will is related (like commanded good deeds that did not occur), those to which only the universal will is related (like permissible acts and acts of disobedience), and those to which neither of the two wills is related.
