The question

How can one delay and combine the Isha prayer for someone who has striven to reach Arafah and dawn is near on the night of Eid al-Adha, knowing that An-Nawawi holds the view of going to catch the standing (at Arafah) and delaying the prayer?

The answer

If the time for standing at Arafat becomes short for a pilgrim who has not yet prayed 'Isha', such that if he prays 'Isha' fully, he will miss the standing, there are three opinions on the matter:

1. He should delay the prayer until he can perform the standing, because missing the standing entails many hardships, and this is a greater need than that which permits combining two prayers. 2. He should pray the prayer of intense fear (salat shiddat al-khawf), by starting the prayer while moving towards Arafat. This is closer to the rules and objectives of . 3. He should prioritize the prayer because its time is limited, whereas Hajj can be performed in another year.

The most preponderant opinion is the second one, chosen by Imam An-Nawawi, Ibn Taymiyyah, Al-Mardawi, and Ibn Al-Qayyim, which is that he should pray the prayer of intense fear.
