If a person is destined for torment in the grave, will this torment continue throughout his stay in the grave, or will he be tormented for a period and then transferred to a garden from the gardens of Paradise in the grave? And are those who died as sinners during the time of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, still being tormented to this day?

The torment of the grave is of two types: permanent and continuous, never ceasing, and temporary, which isقطع. This applies to those who died during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and were sinners. The proof for this is what was narrated by Al-Bukhari and Muslim from Ibn Abbas, that the Prophet, peace be upon him, passed by two graves whose occupants were being tormented. One of them used not to guard himself from his urine, and the other used to walk around spreading slander. Ibn Hajar and others have confirmed that these two men were Muslims.
