Is a husband entitled to ask his wife to leave her job as long as he is able to provide for her, and is he entitled to demand the mahr for divorcing her if she refuses?

The basic principle is that a woman should work in her home, but it is permissible for her to work outside the home with legitimate Islamic controls. Obedience to her husband in what is right remains obligatory upon her. If the wife stipulated to her husband that she would continue her work, he does not have the right to force her to leave it. If the wife wishes to separate, it is permissible for her to seek Khul' (divorce at the instance of the wife) in exchange for financial compensation to the husband.
