This world is a place of trial, and its nature is to be troubled. Sadness in it is a natural thing, but if it persists in a way that affects daily life and prevents one from performing their duties, it becomes an illness that requires treatment. The treatment lies in patience, piety, having a good opinion of Allah, and reliance upon Him, as Ibn Taymiyyah said, "Grief and lamentation are forbidden, and patience and steadfastness are commanded." If sadness develops into depression, it requires medical follow-up with a reliable psychiatrist, in addition to faith-based treatments. Symptoms of depression include: persistent sadness, loss of pleasure, pessimism, feelings of guilt, sleep and eating problems, physical pains, crying, tension, fatigue, and lack of concentration. If four or more of these symptoms are present, a doctor should be consulted. It is recommended to occupy oneself with beneficial activities such as reading the Qur'an and hobbies, and to consume beneficial foods like honey and 'talbinah', which alleviate some sadness.
