How should a son act if his parents' commands contradict each other?

If parents command two conflicting things, the preponderant view is that obedience to the mother takes precedence over obedience to the father, due to the mother's precedence in righteousness as stated in the hadith (definition) of Abu Hurairah: "Your mother, then your mother, then your mother, then your father." Scholars have explained that this precedence is due to the difficulties of pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding, which are exclusive to the mother. This precedence does not mean a lack of equality between the parents in general righteousness, but in cases of conflict, the mother's side is favored, as held by Al-Layth ibn Sa'd, Al-Muhasibi, and Abu Hanifah, and it is the apparent opinion of Malik. It should be noted that obedience to parents is only in what is good and permissible (ma'ruf).
