If my father deprives me of something, and my mother tells me to do it, whom should I obey?

Obedience to parents can be summarized in three situations: The first is when the command involves an act of disobedience (to God); in this case, obedience is not permissible, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Obedience is only in what is good and right." The second is when the command does not involve disobedience and a reconciliation between the two (parents' wishes) is possible; in this case, reconciliation should be sought, as exemplified by Imam Malik's response to someone who asked him about his father and mother: "Obey your father and do not disobey your mother." The third is when the command does not involve disobedience, but reconciliation between the two is not possible; in this case, obedience to the mother takes precedence over the father, because her right to dutifulness is greater.
