What is incumbent upon me when I recall past sins after performing the Hajj pilgrimage: should I continue to feel remorse or be optimistic about Allah's forgiveness?

The accepted Hajj (pilgrimage), which involves no obscenity or transgression, is that from which its performer returns as pure as the day his mother gave birth to him. This is the Hajj performed with lawful money, without ostentation or seeking fame. A sign of its acceptance is that the servant does not return to sin and restores rights to their rightful owners. The pilgrim must not be deluded by his deed; rather, he should fear that it may not have been accepted from him, and he should sincerely supplicate to his Lord to accept it from him. He should combine the fear of falling short with a good opinion of Allah, for Allah accepts His servant's repentance and forgives him as long as his opinion of Him is good. As for expecting forgiveness while persisting in sin, that is ignorance and delusion.
