Did the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) see his Lord at Sidrat al-Muntaha, or did he see the light of the veil of his Lord, Glorified and Exalted be He? And what is the methodology of the Righteous Predecessors regarding this issue, especially since Imam Ahmad was of the view that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saw his Lord, while the Hadith states: "I saw a light, how could I see Him?"

We previously discussed the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah regarding the vision of Allah the Almighty. No explicit text has been reported from Imam Ahmad affirming the physical vision (ru'yah 'ayniyyah). Rather, what is authentically reported from him is either restricting the vision to the heart or stating it in general terms. Ahmad followed what came from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the statement of Ibn 'Abbas, "He saw Him with his heart twice." None of his companions reported that he said, "He saw Him with his eye." Ibn al-Qayyim, in fact, rejected those who claimed that Ahmad said, "He saw Him with his own eye." Therefore, there is no contradiction between the hadith and the statement of Imam Ahmad. The methodology of the Salaf on this issue is agreed upon, except for what was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas.
