What is the ruling on not marrying individuals with mental illnesses due to their inability to bear the responsibility of family and children, and the possibility of children being subjected to physical harm?
It has been previously explained that marrying an insane person or one in a similar state is permissible, as it entails bringing about benefits and averting harms, and it may even reach the level of obligation. His inability to bear responsibility does not prevent his marriage; if he has wealth, his guardian should spend from it on him and his family. Otherwise, his guardian should spend on him and his family. A father is obligated to provide for his son if his maintenance is incumbent upon him and he is in need of marriage. As for an insane person from whom harm and aggression are feared, it appears that he should not be married so as not to harm others, due to the saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "There should be no harm nor reciprocating harm." Insanity is one of the defects that establishes the option of annulment, therefore the other party must be informed of this defect.
