Is it permissible to take a loan from a bank to pay off many urgent debts, knowing that failure to pay will lead to scandal, and there is no other solution?
It is impermissible to borrow from usurious banks to repay debt, for usury is among the grave sins. The creditor must grant respite to the debtor who is in hardship until he is able to repay. Seek lawful means to settle the debt, and seek Allah's help. It was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, a supplication to relieve worry and repay debt: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, and I seek refuge in You from inability and laziness, and I seek refuge in You from cowardice and stinginess, and I seek refuge in You from the burden of debt and the domination of men." Increase in repentance and seeking forgiveness, for whoever adheres to seeking forgiveness, Allah will make for him a way out of every difficulty and a relief from every worry.
